Considered a masterpiece of the time, California Surfriders, showed sturdy men and women enjoying a nearly pristine California coast from La Jolla to Santa Barbara, and on up to Santa Cruz and Pacifica: beach parties, hardly any traffic along the Pacific Coast Highway along expanses that were still open and undeveloped.

Doc Ball was tremendously influential in the growth of surfing in California, especially between the 1930's and 1950's. Doc was instrumental, along with Adie Bayer, in organizing and leading surfing's first great surf club, the Palos Verdes Surfing Club (PVSC), a group whose legacy is still felt today. More importantly, Doc became surfing's first truly dedicated surf photographer. Although others had shot surfers and surfing before him - most notably Tom Blake - it was not until Doc Ball that surf photography rightly came into its own. The Life Story of Doc Ball is being celebrated tomorrow at Surfing Heritage in San Clemente.
