Iran: CIA-orchestrated coup (Operation Ajax). August 19: Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi regains power after a CIA- and MI6-backed coup overthrows Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh, who had nationalized British-controlled oil industry. Marks a pivotal moment in Iranian and Middle East history. Soviet Union announces it has tested a hydrogen bomb.

Yugoslavia-Greece-Turkey Balkan Pact talks begin.

July-August: Preliminary discussions for what will become the 1954 Balkan Pact, a Cold War anti-communist alliance. August: Severe flooding in northern and central China kills tens of thousands. September 25-26: Typhoon "Tess" hits Japan, killing over 400.

July 4: Wimbledon - Maureen Connolly (USA) wins women's singles, completing the first calendar-year women's Grand Slam. September 1: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's successful Everest ascent (May 29) formally honored by Queen Elizabeth II in coronation-year honors list.
