Containing the first 11 Chapters of H. Wells''War of the Worlds' with Illustrations by Warwick Goble, the serial edition which preceded the later complete Heinemann edition of 1898.
Arthur Pearson, Henrietta Street, London, 1897. Green cloth with gilt art nouveau decoration.
9.5" x 6.5" (24.25cm x 16.25cm). 708pp, plus 2pp index and adverts to rear. The chapters are contained in three separate sections therein.
The collection otherwise contains an array of interesting period stories and articles, including magic tricks, the making of cricket bats, a critique of palmistry, bicycle tricks, wrestling, etc. Also contains part of'Captains Courageous' by Rudyard Kipling, and'Tales of the High Seas' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Rear panel cloth showing a couple of spots of what appears to be small surface loss. Board gutters cracked and showing some gauze, though boards remain soundly in situ nonetheless.
A little marking to endpapers and light uniform creasing to first leaf cluster at lower fore edge, but again this is quite innocuous. Light foxing to closed edges, and one or two inner leaves showing isolated marginal foxing. C ontents are otherwise all clean and bright throughout, with no inscriptions, etc.
