Parkett was a highly influential, bilingual (German/English) contemporary art magazine founded in Zurich in 1984 by Bice Curiger, Jacqueline Burckhardt, Walter Keller, and Peter Blum, with a New York office added later. Operating from 1984 to 2017, it released 101 volumes, functioning as a "time capsule" that featured in-depth, monographic "portraits" of over 270 artists, including Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois, and Cindy Sherman. Founding & Mission: Conceived as a bridge between European and American art scenes, Parkett aimed to move beyond standard art reporting to create a "curated event-between-covers". Its goal was to foster direct, intense collaboration with artists. Unique Collaboration Model: Each featured artist worked closely with the magazine on content, design, and layout.
Furthermore, each artist created a special, signed, and numbered editioned artwork for the publication, making it a unique, collectible, and affordable art object. Key Figures & Legacy: The publication was long-led by editor-in-chief Bice Curiger and publisher Dieter von Graffenried. Due to the changing landscape of print media and the rise of digital reading, Parkett ceased printing after volume 100/101 in December 2017. Archival Impact: In 2001, The Museum of Modern Art, New York held an exhibition of the first 60 volumes, highlighting Parkett's role as both a "small museum and large library". The complete archive of 101 volumes is considered a comprehensive resource on contemporary art from the last three decades of the 20th century and early 21st century. Among the fans listed on the magazine's website are former Museum of Modern Art curator Rob Storr, who called it "the most stylish, serious art publication of recent decades"; Ullens Center director Philip Tinari, who said that "the diversity of works on view offer a sense of what artists can do with the challenge of how to distill their practices into a single, compact object or image"; and Gong Yan, editor of Shanghai's Art World magazine, who offered, How much we envy a medium that needs no attitude! One sign of Parkett's rare pedigree within the art community: Curiger, its longtime editor, was selected to curate the 2011 Venice Biennale, which she titled ILLUMInazioni.
