Joan Gratz, known for her fusion of clay and photography, designed the cover art. Note these differences on the cover of this magazine which to me indicate a very early / first version. Under the Nintendo Power logo masthead, it says "PREMIERE ISSUE 1988".
The other version has July/August 1988. Super Mario 2 "18-Page Spectacular". The article is in fact 20 pages, and this was corrected on the other version. The text bubble says "Free Sample Copy".The other version has "Free Poster Inside". The Nintendo Power logo masthead has a very small "TM". The other version has a larger TM. Zelda has a "TM" after it.
The other version has no TM after Zelda. The magazine is mostly flat, free of any bends.
The spine looks like the magazine has never been read / opened up wide. There is one nick on the spine, and three marks on top left of cover from a spiral notebook that laid on top. Other than that, no dog eared page corners, creases, tears, etc. Very nice condition, in my opinion. Please see the photos and judge for yourself.
