This is the controversial Muhammad Ali cover that led to him being stripped of his heavyweight title and banned from fighting. The image depicts Ali as Saint Sebastian who was martyred after converting to Christianity. Tied to a stake and shot at with 6 arrows, he survived, went out into the street and helped a blind girl regain her sight by converting her to Christianity. The idea for this shot came about after Ali refused to join the US Armys fight in the Vietnam War because of his recent conversion to Islam. T he all white cover has light very few blemishes or signs of age, 63 years old. The cover is otherwise bright and clean, the spine has some fraying at the top and bottom edges showing date and title though is still very strong, see photo. The magazine is a superb copy and these old Esquires usually crumble more than this - The final two photographs are of the spine and back cover.
