A Very Good copy of the complete novel as it appeared in Cornhill Magazine, extracted from the original 16 monthly serials and bound together in one volume of red cloth with the pastedowns and facing side of each free endpaper being decorated. The spine is lettered in gilt.

The volume shows general wear as well as some splitting where the spine meets the adjoining boards. Within the leaves show scatterd foxing. All sixteen plates and all sixteen vignettes are present -- the sixteen vignettes did not appear in the book edition published on April 20, 1867 and this seriaization was published in The Cornhill magazine beginning in the February 1866 issue and continued without interruption through and including the May 1867 issue. Thus, most of the novel's first UK edition was published there prior to the publication of the entire UK edition of the novel. Note: While dated 1866, the TRUE FIRST EDITION WAS PUBLISHED BY HARPER on February 8, 1867 and is -- in our experience -- exceedingly scarce to rare.
