93 b/w plates with upwards of 700 illustrations, 16 full page color plates. Hardbound with gold gilting on cover and binding. Color frontispiece, Title page printed in red and black with vignette. A description of historical episodes, legendary characters, folklore, myth, religious symbolism. Bibliography, legend of Japanese art and Japanese index art rear.

Text in English with Japanese index. Provenance: A confirmation letter sent by William H. Allen, a bookseller based in Philadelphia dated September 23, 1955 to Dora Dean, confirms the provenance. Dean was the Supervisory Librarian for the American Embassy in Tokyo.

In the signed letter, George Allen confirms tht the book was originally presented by a friend to Horace Traubel, writer Walt Whitman's literary executor and one of his best friends. Horace Traubel was an American essayist, poet, magazine publisher, and writer. He was closely associated with the Arts and Crafts movement within the United States and published a magazine The Conservator from 1890 until his death in 1919.

He is best remembered as the literary executor anf biographer of his close friend Walt Whitman, with whom he transcribed and compiled 9 volumes of daily conversations, entitled With Walt Whitman in Camden. Condition: Fair-Good general condition with cover wear and evidence of possible repair based on creases on the binding. Edition is fully intact and artwork and text very clear.
