I have for sale a book entitled PEARSON'S MAGAZINE VOL III JANUARY TO JUNE 1897 published by C Arthur Pearson Ltd. Here we have a mix of articles on industry, sport, science, the arts together with literature. This volume includes articles on palmistry, wrestling, shooting, photography, show dogs, rocks, odd musical instruments, and the making of cricket bats.
Amongst the books being serialised in this volume is "The War of the Worlds" by H G Wells, from chapter I-IX, the first printing of this influential novel, with striking illustrations by Warwick Goble. In addition there are three of the "Tales of the High Seas" by Conan Doyle; and chapters III-IX of "Captains Courageous" by Rudyard Kipling, with illustrations by Paul Hardy. There are numerous b/w illustrations throughout, 18 of which are full-page.Half bound tan leather on maroon hardboards. Some scuffing to the leather. Five raised bands with a black title block, gilt lettering and gilt decoration on the spine. Brown stains to a few pages. Front hinge partially cracked but all pages are tight and the book is in very good condition.
