Irving Penn's fourth book evolved out of assignments for VOGUE magazine. From 1967 to 1973 Penn photographed different varieties of flowers for each Christmas issue. However, most of the photographs selected for this book are reproduced for the first time. As he explained, his preference was to photograph flowers when they have already begun spotting and browning and twisting on their way back to the earth.
His ability to photograph the flowers like fashions verges on the uncanny. Penn was among the first to exploit the possibilities of close up flower imagery. Through his high precision close-up iconic style, the symbolic power and austerity of the shapes take on anthropomorphic qualities not unlike the fashion subject for which he was originally known. Light wear to the boards. Ding to the head of the spine.
Internally, prior owner name to the first free endpaper. The dust jacket has moderate wear. Chip to the head of the DJ spine.Loss of laminate in a few places.
